A man was murdered in Kansas yesterday. Shot to death, while performing his duties as an usher at his church. HIS CHURCH. Killed in a place that most people would associate with sanctuary; in a place where he was not wearing the bulletproof vest he often wore.

Why? Because he believed in a woman’s right to make her own decisions about her health care, and a doctor’s duty to provide that health care. And surely, no matter what our personal feelings about abortion, we can all agree that gunning a man down is not the answer. (IN HIS CHURCH, did I mention that part?)

[I'm not sure why it is bothering me so much that he was shot in church. I am not a religious person. I would have been shocked and outraged had he been killed at work, or at home. But there is something about the church as a historical place of safety and sanctuary that is angering me further.]

If you would like to send a message of condolence to the family of Dr. George Tiller, you can do so here.

What the hell kind of parent puts a t-shirt on a 9 year old girl that says “My boyfriend is out of town”? Do you know how hard it was for me to keep from saying, Wow, that’s about nine kinds of inappropriate?

Are you kidding me?

BBC has been receiving complaints from parents over the new host of some shows on CBeebies, the network’s preschool-geared channel. So, is she a convicted criminal?  Behaving inappropriately? Swearing on the air?

No. She’s missing a hand.

Seriously. Parents are COMPLAINING to the BBC because now they are “forced to have a conversation” with their children about disabilities. Or that she “scares their children”. Well, if a person with one hand scares your children, then that conversation about disabilities is long overdue, don’t you think?

I hesitated to post this video, because it is without question religious, and I am not, particularly. However, I agree wholeheartedly with the basic idea, the sentiment is SPOT ON, and the design is really good. (You know my hatred of poor cover art? It extends to bad design.)

Now I’m off to bake some cookies, make Christmas ornaments with Sport, and order a few goats. Spend less, give more, love all. Happy Advent.

… I was finally able to watch US election coverage without throwing things. Seriously, in 2004 I scared the crap out of my cats.

Sport watched the returns with me until it was his bedtime. Well, past his bedtime really. This morning right away he asked if “the blue team” won. Yep. “Did Bama win?” Yep. “Mom. Mom, he is the first black man to win that race. Did you know that?” Yep. And may you grow up thinking it is commonplace to have a family of colour in the White House.

Party like it’s… well, 2008. (But BOO! to California Prop 8, Florida Amendment 2, Arizona Prop 102, and especially Arkansas Initiative 1, which despite its title does not only ban adoption by gay couples, but bans adoption by unmarried people in general. Screw you, Arkansas.)

Party!
